Production planning

Laying out a manufacturing building

Turn receiving, production and dispatch into a useful building notes before choosing a footprint.

Follow one product from incoming material to dispatch. Mark the machines, waiting areas and lifting points along that route, then show how equipment can be reached for maintenance.

Follow the material

Mark where a delivery vehicle stops, where material waits for inspection, and how it reaches the first workstation. Continue through processing, assembly, packaging and finished-goods storage. Include rejected material, returns and waste: those movements still need a place in the building.

Use separate colors for people and moving equipment. Where routes cross, record the conflict as a question for the design team. This drawing does not need to look architectural. It needs to show the operation honestly, including busy periods.

Measure working space, not just machine size

Collect supplier drawings for the largest equipment. Note the access needed to load stock, change tooling, open service panels and remove a component for repair. A machine footprint alone does not describe the space it uses.

List equipment that is already selected separately from equipment that is only being considered. For each item, record dimensions, utility information available from its supplier, and who must confirm installation requirements. Do not turn an uncertain future machine into a firm building requirement without labeling the assumption.

Compare two floor plans

Ask for a discussion of a compact arrangement and an arrangement that preserves a specific expansion route. Compare travel paths, door positions, maintenance access and interruptions to existing work. Explain whether new production would extend a line, add a parallel cell or occupy another building.

An expansion rectangle is helpful only if deliveries, utilities and the present operation can still function around it. Identify what must remain accessible during a future project.
